Go1 an Online Learning and Education Platform

Go1 is the world's leading content expert and your trusted L&D partner. They help you meet your up-skilling and compliance needs with content from over 250 providers. I have worked for Go1 for the past two years and have been able to lead some exciting projects including a new bulk uploading feature, reporting and insights and a new admin app.

Bulk Uploader

Project Overview

Creators bringing content into Go1 get confused about where they need to go to create and what they need to do to get their content into the Premium Library. Creators must create learning objects and the associated metadata individually, which is time-consuming and repetitive. Creators with lots of content have to be manually onboarded in the back-end system by the Go1 Content team which is not sustainable and or scalable.

"One of the most confusing and frustrating aspects for us was the absence of tools that allowed us to upload multiple pieces of content simultaneously. This process consumed a significant amount of time.” - Creator

Problem Statement

Currently, the time to value for Creators is inhibited due to a slow and non-self-serving onboarding process.

Goals and objectives

Enabling creators to bulk upload content and metadata allows them to submit more content to our premium library faster. This leads to an increase in the number of learning objects shared by creators and their ability to generate more revenue.

Persona outline

User goals:

  • Assist our Creators in uploading and updating content easily and efficiently.

  • Additionally, enable Managers to upload content in bulk to their portals.

  • Ensure transparency of content status.

Primary Group

  • Content Partner (SMB)

  • Providing high-quality content and generating revenue is important to them.

Secondary group

  • L&D Manager (SMB)

  • They are committed to ensuring their employees have the right resources and are compliant.

Qualitative feedback

To gain a better understanding of user interaction with the old solutions, I utilised Fullstory to observe and analyse how users were onboarding their content. This process revealed several instances of usability and logic issues, confirming my initial assumptions. Additionally, I collected qualitative feedback from our internal customer success team and conducted interviews with 12 of our Creators as part of our research.

Competitor Analysis

Key Insights

  • A successful content management platform must have a bulk uploader that can seamlessly integrate with various file formats and sources. This includes compatibility with popular file types such as images (JPEG, PNG), videos (MP4, AVI), documents (PDF, DOCX), and more. Additionally, it should support importing content from different sources, such as local storage, cloud storage services (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox), and social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, YouTube). By providing broad compatibility and integration options, the platform allows marketers to efficiently manage and upload content from diverse origins, saving time and effort.

  • An effective bulk uploader for content must offer robust metadata management and customisation capabilities. Metadata plays a vital role in organising and categorising content, making it easily searchable and discoverable within the platform. The uploader should allow Creators to assign relevant metadata fields to their content, such as titles, descriptions, tags, categories, and keywords. Furthermore, customisation options for metadata fields should be available, enabling marketers to tailor the fields to their specific content organisation needs. By offering comprehensive metadata management features, the platform empowers marketers to efficiently organise and retrieve their content, facilitating streamlined content management workflows.

  • A good bulk uploader for content should include bulk editing and error-handling features to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Creators often need to make changes to multiple content items simultaneously, such as updating titles, descriptions, or tags. The uploader should provide intuitive bulk editing functionality, allowing Creators to edit metadata fields in a batch, eliminating the need for manual editing of each item individually. Additionally, the platform should offer error-handling mechanisms to identify and address any issues during the upload process, such as file format inconsistencies, missing metadata, or file size limitations. Effective error handling ensures that content is uploaded successfully and minimises the likelihood of data loss or discrepancies. These features contribute to a smoother and more productive content management experience.

We conducted a research study by interviewing 22 of our Creator Partners. After completing our interviews, we compiled all the information and then used enjoyHQ, a research software, to affinity map and thematically cross-reference the information from all participants in order to identify emerging themes.

  • These insights support our hypothesis that we need bulk importing and updating tooling. This feature will make it easier for partners to update and upload new content. In subsequent iterations, we will also explore integrating the course structure in bulk or providing it as part of a bulk offering.

  • It may be necessary to update the individual editor to enhance the partner experience.

  • We need further education and help documents to assist partners in better understanding each offering. Additionally, the taxonomy needs to be cleaned up to ensure clear and consistent actions throughout the Creator experience.

Audience Research

Delivery Phase

Design and Development

Based on our research, we have developed the following strategy for this project:

  • Use a step-by-step wizard flow to guide users through each stage, ensuring clear information layout. This helps partners understand more about metadata and when to implement it.

  • Enable execution of individual steps separately for flexibility. This includes the option to upload content or metadata only. Partners often prefer executing steps individually and can conveniently update content in bulk later.

  • Design the system to be easily componentised for flexibility in relocation if needed.

Validation Phase

From the prototype to the finished product

The designs were initially tested internally by our CSMs, and then we interviewed 14 of our partners to gather feedback on the prototype.

We received some valuable feedback and made changes to key areas, including:

  • Error reporting: ensuring that enough information is provided to take action on the surfaced errors.

  • Switching the steps of the flow: since we have two different audiences, one trying to get content into the Premium Library and another uploading content to their portal, it was important to rearrange the steps to better understand where the content was going and match the appropriate checks.

  • We noticed that many of our partners have their computers zoomed in, so we made sure to cater to this and condense the contents vertically on the screen.

After implementing these changes, the team built the bulk uploader feature. We did an internal bug bash for 2 weeks and then we released a beta version to our partners.

Roll Out Phase

Final Outcome

Streamlined the process of uploading educational content, resulting in beta partners being able to publish content 29% faster. Check out the help doc!

Final Thoughts

Next steps

Continuing on, exploring ways to make the Bulk Uploader more accessible to our partners. This includes ensuring that zoomed-in dimensions fit within the frame, improving tab and key accessibility, and providing language support.

Additionally, we will address the following steps:

  • Error Support: How to provide enhanced support for errors and issues.

  • Future Considerations: Exploring alternative options to replace CSV files in the future.

Learnings

Clear and consistent communication with stakeholders is crucial for successful product design. Collaborating closely with the engineering team helps address technical challenges and find creative solutions. Effective communication and collaboration optimise the product design process.
